My long-time friend and colleague compared a couple of newspaper editions the other day and I do believe he hit as they say: “the nail on the head …and drove it in with force..”
The Plain Dealer’s front page was a story of corruption in government, something they have been on top of for a while. And not just pieces you pick up without digging and digging.
The Beacon Journal’s lead story was about fencing the Y-Bridge to stop suicides. And how there was opposition, but barely a mention…they failed to flesh out that part of the story.
Where are the folks saying if somebody wants to kill himself or herself a bridge fence won’t stop them. Are we going to require “fences” on high-rise balconies and every high point around?
But back to Abe’s story where he points out that with the demise of the printed word, investigative reporting will fade.
Does anybody really expect the airwaves media to do such reporting…all they want is a quick sound bite.
Of course if it’s a story of misery and involving children, the airwave media will stomp it to death…finding every little dirty bit and repeating it over and over again.
The Plain Dealer is cutting staff, but seems to still be able to come up with outstanding journalist efforts.
They don’t seem to be using the old excuse I’ve heard so many times: “We don’t have the resources.”
Translation: They’ve gotten rid of so many bodies that they have to hope for a phone call for a story. And, heaven forbid there enough bodies for a reporter to cover a beat, get to know folks and nose around to see what’s going on.
As I said, Abe nailed it down. If you’re interest in what this veteran reporter has to say, give him a once-over at Grumpyabe.blogspot.com.
